ImportLens terms and privacy

Last updated: 7 October 2026

These terms and this privacy notice cover the ImportLens browser extension. Read more about ImportLens and how to install it on the ImportLens page.

What ImportLens is

ImportLens brings the Importcalc import calculator to the car listing you are looking at. Instead of typing the car’s details into the calculator yourself, you let ImportLens fill them in from the listing. You check them, correct them if needed and decide whether to calculate. It needs an Importcalc account with a confirmed email address, and during the beta access may be limited to invited users.

ImportLens is not a scraper

A scraper visits pages automatically and collects listings in bulk. ImportLens works the other way round: it only acts on the one listing you have opened yourself, it only reads the few car details that listing already shows you, and nothing leaves your browser until you press “Analyse ad”. It never opens pages on its own, and Importcalc does not keep copies of listings. Each analysis is your own private calculation, just like one you make on the Importcalc website.

What is read and what is sent

The beta covers passenger cars offered at a fixed price on supported car listing sites; on any other page, ImportLens tells you that it is not supported. When ImportLens is turned on and you open such a listing, a card shows the make, model, model year, first registration, mileage and price as fields you can check and correct. ImportLens also works out which country the car is sold from, using the listing’s location details (such as the country or postcode in the seller’s address) or the site itself; the address itself is never sent. Showing the card sends nothing and uses no allowance, and the listings you view are not recorded.

Mileage is optional and only refines the market comparison behind the ImportScore. If the listing does not state the first registration clearly, you enter it yourself. The details stay in your browser while the listing is open and are cleared when you leave or close it, turn ImportLens off, or after 30 minutes.

When you press “Analyse ad”, ImportLens first checks that you are signed in and have allowance left. Only then are the checked details and the car’s country sent to Importcalc – never the listing’s web address, listing number, photos, description, seller details, VIN or your browsing history. From then on, while the listing stays open and visible and until its details are cleared, the card checks your sign-in and allowance again about every 30 seconds and fetches the status of an analysis in progress; these requests carry no car details. The total is shown as soon as it has been calculated, and the ImportScore follows when the market comparison is done.

Allowance

Only a completed analysis uses allowance. On a free account it uses one free monthly import calculation; on a paid plan with search credits it uses one search credit; on an Unlimited plan it counts as a manual search under the fair-use rules in the terms of use. An analysis that stops because the exact variant must be confirmed, or that fails, uses nothing. Opening a saved analysis again does not use more allowance.

What is kept, and for how long

A completed analysis is saved on your account as a private calculation with a basic import report and is kept like your other saved calculations: until you delete it or your account is deleted. Its report preview expires after 7 days. Each analysis also creates an operations record linked to your account, holding the account, the time, the status and a cryptographic checksum of the car details you sent – not the details themselves. It is kept until your account is deleted or anonymised.

In your browser, the extension stores only its on/off setting and the card’s size and position, and it sets no cookies of its own. For its requests to Importcalc it uses your existing Importcalc login, so your browser sends your Importcalc login cookies with them; the extension never reads or stores your login details.

How your data is handled

To run an analysis, Importcalc looks up specifications and compares market prices using independent sources and an AI provider, the Google Gemini API. Because it uses grounding with Google Search, Google keeps the prompts, context and responses for 30 days; this storage cannot be switched off, so it is not covered by zero data retention. A specification lookup for a make, model and year may be reused for later lookups of the same car, including in other users’ searches, for up to 30 days; that cache holds vehicle data, not personal data.

To keep the service running, we measure outcomes, response times and provider usage. The car details you send are kept out of logs and analytics events, even if you have consented to analytics, and usage analytics follows your Importcalc consent choices.

We process the details you send because it is necessary to provide the analysis you asked for (performance of a contract). Security and technical measurement rely on our legitimate interests, and usage analytics relies on your consent.

Your rights and the general terms

Importcalc’s general terms of use and privacy policy (in Norwegian) also apply to ImportLens and your saved calculations. The privacy policy describes your rights – access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability and objection, and withdrawing consent – and how to exercise them.

ImportLens gives a preliminary estimate. Check the technical data, transport costs and final tax basis before you buy.

You can turn ImportLens off, and remove its site access, from the extension button, or uninstall it in Chrome. ImportLens is an independent Importcalc tool and is not affiliated with any listing site.
