A battery-electric car registered before 31 December 2026 gets VRT relief of up to €5,000. For most used electric cars that wipes out the VRT completely, and a fully electric car pays no NOx levy either. What is left is the purchase price, and that depends mostly on where the car comes from.
One real advert, run through Importcalc on 20 September 2026: a 2021 Tesla Model 3 at a Northern Ireland dealer for £18,995 lands at €22,149 with proof that Revenue accepts, and at €29,957 without it. The nearest Irish car with similar mileage was €25,995 on the same day.
How the electric vehicle relief works
VRT on a passenger car is a percentage of the Open Market Selling Price, the OMSP, which is Revenue's view of what the car would sell for here. A car with 0 g/km of CO2 sits in the lowest band, 7 percent. The relief then comes off that figure:
OMSP up to €40,000: relief of up to €5,000. At 7 percent the VRT on a €40,000 car is €2,800, so the relief covers all of it.
OMSP above €40,000 and below €50,000: the relief shrinks. The law sets it at €5,000 minus half of the amount above €40,000.
OMSP of €50,000 or more: no relief.
The car must be a series production vehicle powered only by an electric motor, and it must be registered before 31 December 2026.
Revenue applies the relief automatically at registration. There is no form to fill in. The relief reduces VRT only. It does nothing for customs duty or VAT, which depend on where the car comes from.
The same car shows the taper when the OMSP is changed in Importcalc. These two lines are sensitivity runs, not valuations of this Tesla:
OMSP | VRT at 7 percent | Relief | VRT payable |
|---|
€22,500 (the researched value for this car) | €1,575 | €1,575 | €0 |
€45,000 | €3,150 | €2,500 | €650 |
€50,000 | €3,500 | €0 | €3,500 |
Where to look: Northern Ireland, Great Britain or the EU
Northern Ireland. Right-hand drive, close by, and free of customs duty and import VAT when the car was legally imported into Northern Ireland and you can prove it.
Great Britain. Right-hand drive, but the car goes through customs. Duty applies unless the car is of UK origin with proof, and VAT at 23 percent is charged at import. The VRT relief does not touch either.
EU countries. No duty, and no Irish VAT on a used car with more than six months and more than 6,000 km. The cars are left-hand drive, which few buyers here want.
The example: a 2021 Tesla Model 3 in Newtownabbey
The advert was on Autotrader UK on 20 September 2026 and was opened and checked that day. The same car was also listed on DoneDeal at the same price.
2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus, rear-wheel drive, white
34,085 miles, which is 54,854 km, one owner according to the DoneDeal listing
£18,995 at Donnelly Motorstore Mallusk, Newtownabbey, County Antrim
Autotrader rated the price £671 above its market average, and the search listing described the battery as tested

Within 60 miles of Belfast, Autotrader showed seven Tesla Model 3 cars from 2021 to 2023 that day. DoneDeal showed 14 Model 3 cars from 2021 for the whole island, this one included.
How it was calculated in Importcalc
The search takes the car, the price in pounds, the first registration date and the mileage. Choosing Northern Ireland as the place of purchase opens one more question: can you provide proof that Revenue accepts? The advert gives only the year, so 1 June 2021 was entered as the first registration date. Replace it with the date on the V5C.

Importcalc then researches the Irish value. For this car it returned an OMSP of €22,500 with high confidence, from a researched range of €19,000 to €26,000. The OMSP is an estimate. Revenue sets the figure that counts when the car is presented at the NCTS.

Cost item | Amount |
|---|
Purchase price (£18,995 at 1 GBP = 1.1644 EUR) | €22,117.78 |
Customs duty and VAT (accepted Northern Ireland proof) | €0 |
VRT before relief (7 percent of €22,500) | €1,575 |
Electric vehicle relief | −€1,575 |
VRT payable | €0 |
NOx levy | €0 |
Number plates and tyre charge | €31 |
Estimated landed cost | €22,149 |

No transport is included. Newtownabbey is a day trip from most of the country, so add your own travel and a first service.
The proof is worth €7,808 on this car
A used car bought in Northern Ireland comes in without customs duty and import VAT only if it was legally imported into Northern Ireland. The cleanest proof is a Northern Ireland import declaration. Where that is not available, Revenue may accept other proof at its discretion, and it asks for at least:
the original V5C from the last registered keeper, showing an address in Northern Ireland
a vehicle service history in Northern Ireland
an MOT test history in Northern Ireland
Revenue verifies what you submit. It says that without these proofs you will not be able to register the vehicle, and that customs duty and import VAT may arise where a car was not properly imported into Northern Ireland. In Importcalc the same Tesla without accepted proof follows the customs route. With 10 percent duty entered, because a Model 3 is not of UK origin, Importcalc adds €2,212 of duty and €5,596 of VAT. The landed cost becomes €29,957. The electric vehicle relief still removes the VRT, but the car now costs €3,962 more than the Irish comparison instead of €3,846 less.
Ask the dealer for the documents before you travel, and make sure they identify this specific car.
What the same car costs here
Three Irish adverts for the 2021 Model 3 Standard Range Plus were opened on DoneDeal on 20 September 2026:
Car | Km | Price | Seller |
|---|
2021 Model 3 Standard Range Plus, one owner | 57,142 | €25,995 | Quantum Autos, Wexford |
2021 Model 3 Standard Range Plus, two owners | 88,600 | €22,950 | Greystones Motors, Dublin |
2021 Model 3 Standard Range Plus, previously registered in the UK | 97,000 | €22,750 | Jonathan O Brien Car Sales, Cork |
The Newtownabbey car through Importcalc | 54,854 | €22,149 | Donnelly Motorstore Mallusk |
Against the one Irish car with similar mileage, the import is €3,846 cheaper. Against the cars at €22,750 and €22,950 it costs about the same, but with 34,000 to 42,000 fewer kilometres. Other 2021 cars in the search ran from €18,950 with 164,000 km to €23,950 with 112,711 km.

Importcalc gives this calculation an import score of 49 out of 100, an opportunity with caveats. The score weighs the landed cost against the whole researched Irish range, where €22,149 is an ordinary price for the model. The saving appears only when you compare with a low-mileage car, which is the fair comparison for this one.
The deadline
The relief applies to cars registered before 31 December 2026. The date has been extended before, most recently by the Finance Act 2025, but nothing in the current rules goes beyond it. On this Tesla the relief is worth €1,575. On a car with an OMSP of €40,000 it is worth €2,800. A car bought in December and registered in January is calculated under whatever rules apply then.
Book the NCTS appointment within seven days of bringing the car in, and complete registration within 30 days. After that Revenue charges additional VRT for every day.
What to check on a used electric car
Battery health. Ask for a battery test or a capacity readout, and ask whether the manufacturer's battery warranty transfers with the car.
Charging. Check AC and DC charging during the inspection, and that the cables are with the car.
The V5C, service history and MOT history. They are your import proof as well as your history check.
The exact version. Battery size, heat pump and driver assistance explain much of the price gap between two cars with the same badge.
Insurance. Get a quote on the Northern Ireland registration before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Do electric cars pay VRT?
VRT is calculated first, at 7 percent of the OMSP. A qualifying electric car registered before 31 December 2026 then gets relief of up to €5,000, so most cars with an OMSP up to €40,000 pay nothing.
Do electric cars pay the NOx levy?
No. A fully electric car has no NOx emissions, so the charge is zero.
Does the relief cover customs duty or VAT?
No. It reduces VRT only. A car from Great Britain, or a Northern Ireland car without accepted proof, still pays duty where it applies and 23 percent VAT at import.
What if the OMSP is above €40,000?
The relief falls by half of the amount above €40,000 and reaches zero at €50,000. At €45,000 the relief is €2,500 and the VRT payable is €650.
Is a used electric car from Germany an option?
For tax, yes: no duty, no Irish VAT on a qualifying used car, and the same VRT relief. The car will be left-hand drive, which limits resale here.
In short
Until 31 December 2026 the VRT on most used electric cars is zero, and the NOx levy is zero as well. On a Northern Ireland Tesla Model 3 at £18,995 the landed cost is €22,149 with accepted proof and €29,957 without it. The Irish car with similar mileage was €25,995. Get the proof and the battery test before you pay, and register before the deadline.
Market snapshot checked on 20 September 2026. The Northern Ireland advert and the three Irish adverts shown with price and mileage were opened and were live on that date. Advert counts and the other prices were read from search results. Used-car adverts can change or disappear. The calculation was run live on importcalc.com on 20 September 2026 and is an estimate. The rules were checked on Revenue's website on 18 and 20 September 2026. Revenue decides the OMSP, the relief and whether import proof is accepted.
